Yuppie Diaries: What to do after Graduation

It has been exactly 1 year after I graduated; 365 days after my so-called “Big Day”. It was the biggest achievement I could ever be proud of back then. Para sakin, may napatunayan na ako. Well, for all kinds of families, it was just the start.. (of hell).

You don’t know real pagod (exhaustion) until you have that monthly KPI with 95 as the passing grade but all the delays will be against you. You don’t know real stress when all the living things in your office pressure you – yes, kahit pati plants (even the plants) and the shoppaholic rat that comes after stealing your things. The transition to undergrad to working gurl real quick was a big blow for me. It was exciting but at the same time scary and frustrating. It’s true what they say, it’s more tiring to work than to study. At this state, I belong to the working class who always say ” if I can go back to studying, I will just study rather work. ” And I’m hella proud of it.

Saying this not to scare off all my yuppie readers but to be the Ate you never had who will guide you through the scary world you’re going to face after your G Day.

  • Take a transition vacation. When I was graduating, some of my friends who were already working kept on advising me to take 2-3 months vacation before starting corporate life. They told me it’s gonna be hard to take a vacation again once you start. I spent almost 2 months being just a palamunin in the house after I graduated. Some people were against my actions, but I’m glad I did. It will help you realize what you really want to do in your life and the time off will really make you think about your life and excited for the next chapter you’re going to have.

  • Apply for work but don’t stress. Apply still for work. That time off won’t require you to be always outside party-ing. There will be lots and lots of tambay days and that is when you should pass your resumes. Spend atleast 3 hrs a day just sending resumes and applying to companies online so you are still on-track. Sayang degree bes kung di mo magagamit sa corporate kahit 2 years lang.

tumblr_nmpo7h8j4L1u47ui9o1_500

  • Prioritize your interviews. You have all the time to go to the beach sunbathing or being a couch-potato managing to finish 5 episodes per day of Kdrama but if someone calls you for an interview — don’t miss it. Even if it’s not the company you’re aiming for, still go to the interview. Not only will you have the chance to gain connections from those companies, but you can also practice what and how to answer to interviews so when your desired company calls, you surely are ready to kill it.

  • Sleep. Sleep more than most! Trust me when I say you won’t be able to catch enough sleep when you start working — even when you try hard. Even when your future workplace is just minutes away from your house. It will not secure you a goodnight’s sleep. I didn’t get enough and still not getting enough sleep even when I just have to cross the street to get to the office. Take all the chances to sleep all day sleep all night – you will be missing it when you start working.

  • Keep your stand. Don’t be intimated by your colleagues posting about their 1st payday, payday treat to self, paycheck, workday, work work work status. Don’t mind them. Remember, you’re the upper hand because you’re still on your vacation mode. Take your time. Enjoy the momentum. Good things will happen, you just have to be ready when the opportunity comes.

Congratulations to all graduates of 2017. You are now officially unemployed on vacation mode. Enjoy the best of it and hoping for your success in finding your dream job in your dream company soon!

Best,

Elli

50/365 – #LetDad&MomKnow

To Papa & Mama, I might not say and express fully how much I adore & love the both of you, but through my words you’ll know how much I do.
The moment I opened up my life to my parents, everything felt lighter – like a huge sack of rice was lifted from my shoulder. I don’t have to hide anything from anyone; I don’t have to worry about telltales from big-mouthed neighbors.

Parents.. no matter how strict they are, no matter how annoying they are with their constant follow-up whenever you leave the house, no matter how irritating they become when they keep on repeating and repeating and repeating words of wisdom you already know and heard for the nth time – they deserve to know, you know. They’re strict like that because they are trying their very best to lead you to the right way. They bombard you with so many questions and assumptions because they simply care about you and what happens in your life. The only thing you can ever give back to those years they sacrificed caring and loving you the best way they can is to let them in your life. Trust me, they’re the best-est best friends you can ever have.

Let me tell you where it started. I had my first-somewhat-relationship when I was in 6th grade. I was the talk of town – new student feels, yeah. That was also when I started keeping things from my parents. They wouldn’t approve of it – I knew it. So it continued as I entered failed relationships after another. Don’t get me wrong, we’re legal. They know who it was and they got to meet everyone during the courtship. But the barrier remained. They would just see the guy once or twice and that was it. Maybe that was why my relationships kept on failing. But on some point somewhere, everything started changing. I would ask advice from my Dad when everything was so complicated or when my ex would throw tantrums at me for irrelevant reasons. Hey, my Dad’s one of the strictest and most disciplinarian Dads you would ever meet. He’s part of the watch-me-kill-the-guy-with-my-own-hands or i’m-watching-you-douchebag-so-you-better-be-careful Dad Club. Oh and my mom, oh my Mom’s the most sophisticated and mataray Mom you’d ever encounter. She’s so intimidating my exes worried about her approval more than my Dad’s. We connect to some stuff but we just fight over almost everything. Despite that, I was surprised when they gave great advices when I was opening up to them. Maybe it was also because we shared a deeper bond when we started attending The Feast that I got the courage to open up to them and they got the understanding and wisdom to relate and give me advices as they know best. To my surprise (again), I found myself crying to them when my ex broke up with me (in front of them).

Maybe your parents are not as understanding as mine is or your bond is not as close as we have – but these things will keep intact despite the differences:

1. Your parents know you best.

Darling, your mom carried you on her mind since the day they thought of having you. Your dad knew how precious you are since the day he held you in his arms when you couldn’t even open your eyes. They. Know. You. Best. They know your worth more than anyone else. They know what you deserve to have and they’d sacrifice everything just for you to have it right in your hands. You may change overtime, but they would still know how beautiful you are inside and out. Keep that in mind. For a creator knows the true value of his creation.

2. Your parents know what’s best for you.

Trust me. Even when sometimes what they make you do makes no sense AT ALL. You’re realize one day the purpose of everything they made you do. Parents feel everything. The moment you introduce someone to them, they know it beforehand if that guy would hurt you or not. You’ll know it through their actions – my mom wouldn’t talk to my ex even just for a little bit because she knew he would just hurt me (this was revealed after our almost 2-year relationship)

3. Your parents are your most dependable knights-in-shining armor.

They will defend you against anyone. They will rescue you through anything – no matter how deep the damage is. They will fight with you side-by-side. Even when it is your fault, they will tell you where you went wrong, might get mad with you a little bit, apologize for you if needed, they will always and forever be fighting for you.

4. Family is family.

They will accept you no matter what – your past, your present, and your future. No matter how martyr you are in loving, no matter how irritating you are because you don’t listen to everyone when you love, no matter how blind you are in your decisions, and no matter how much you care to try even after so many failures. They will always be by your side through it all. You will always be a part of the family and it will be disabled without you.

5. Your parents are God-given.

God speaks to you through the people He put in your life. He gave them to you, arranged and placed them in your life so you can have the best navigators, guides, co-captain in becoming the best you can be; the YOU He has imagined, planned, and destined you to be. Know that through the way your parents love you, care for you, and cherish you is God’s way of showing how much He loves you through them. Value them with everything you are because they deserve it.

So much love for all the parents in the world! 🙌🏻

21/365 – Number 6; 10:47pm

I could tell you a lot of reasons.

I could show you all the things you made me feel.

Like when we were under the lights

And you told me “I wanna make you mine”

You stared, looked into my eyes

As you wait for words to come out of my mouth

Oh, how you look so fine, how can I not say

Forever with you seems right”, then you smiled.

Words may fail, break my trust

But your love will always reign in me

World may judge, they’ll say everything.

I love you anyway, hear me say always

You and me against all the odds.

My love, my last love.

I’d always wonder out of all the things I did

What did I accidentally do

For God to give you in my life

As my last love.

19/365 – Get Married At Barasoain Church

At the age of 25, I plan to (or I should) get married to the right person destined for me and I’m already preparing and considering every little detail for my perfect wedding 4 years from now. For some, 25 is a little bit early but for others it’s just the perfect time. I know God has planned everything in His perfect timing but I’m with the others. It may or may not come when I’m already 25 but it’s always good to have plans for the future so you have something to look forward to.

Of course, one of the first things to consider (other than when) is where. Barasoain Church is in Bulacan and it’s far from the South – probably 4 hours travel time via public transportation. It was my first time to get inside the church and that was when I became a believer of love at first sight.

Vintage historical places like Barasoain Church always take your breath away by bringing you back to when it was brought to life, its prime era, its story for which your heart will be able to translate such powerful emotions.

Oh look at that exquisite interior! I’m an everything-floral girl and I instantly fell inlove with the carefully painted flower patterns on the ceiling. And that chandelier! Perfect to crown the precious moments of all the brides who would walk from that doorstep.

I didn’t get a chance to take an image of the isle going to the alta because there was an on-going mass that time. Took only a photo at this angle where we were sitting during the baptismal mass.

Barasoain Church slayed my future wedding motiff – vintage and floral; Definitely a must-visit Church in the Philippines & must-venue for perfect weddings.

13/365 – Keep on Dreaming | Dreamland Arts & Crafts Cafe, Tagaytay

There are so many beautiful discoveries the South can give you. I’m proud to declare that I am a South girl and even now that I am currently living in Makati, I am still and forever be declaring that I am a South girl by heart. One of the crystals of the South is Tagaytay City which boasts its breathtaking view of Taal Lake. Along it are numerous lutong-bahay restaurants and cafes.

Me and my best friends heard of Dreamland Arts & Crafts Cafe when we were still in College but because we’re still traversing from Easy-Go-Lucky Kolehiyalas to Sofistikadang Working Girls we just managed to visit the cafe this time.

img_0046

It’ a small place when you look at it from the outside – you would probably miss it when you’re on your way going up People’s Park, Tagaytay. It may seem like it but once you reach their doorstep, it will give you doses of euphoria.

img_0243

The design of the place will give you homey and dreamy feeling and you’d never want to leave the place anymore! You can’t really stop from taking selfies wherever you want to and it will all be IG-Worthy!

img_0246

Dreamland is one of the unique cafes I’ve visited. For one, how the people behind it incredibly thought of its theme and how they’d design the place so original that it will give its patrons a whole different feeling. They have materials you can borrow to draw and paint while enjoying a cuppa tea or having a full healthy serving of their pasta

img_0221

img_0226

They offer a wide variety of Hot and Cold Drinks – Non-coffee or coffee based, pastas, pastries, salads, and full meals for a very affordable price. We ordered these yummy food  – Hot Green Tea (served in a teapot; serves 6 tea glasses) Php 100, Hot Chocolate Php 100, Hot Kalamansi Php 60, Meaty Spaghetti Php 170, S’mores (I can’t remember the price but it’s around Php 100-200 also). We thought it wouldn’t be enough for us but suprisingly we were all so full once we finished all of it. Yum!

img_0220

Dreamland Cafe is a must-visit Cafe – coming from a girl from the South. I reside 30 minutes away from Tagaytay and my family and I always go up Tagaytay to eat out and there are restaurants I get bored to even visit again. Not this cafe. I would never get tired of visiting & dreaming inside this little nostalgic palace.

This is where my best friends and I renewed our vows after not seeing each other for quite a while. It will always be a memorable place for us.

8/365 – 10 MINUS 21 (THINGS I DID BEFORE I TURNED 21) : LEARN SOMETHING NEW

LEARN CALLIGRAPHY

I always wanted to learn Calligraphy but I thought it was an expensive hobby. Just buying the nibs, holder, and ink will cost you a fortune. I was just a student when I became interested on doing it – didn’t have the chance to buy stuff because I used my allowance plainly for food and for school projects (or in other words, gala). I couldn’t find the inspiration to pursue it also because all subjects in my course requires a final output of research papers and theses. Ain’t nobody got time for other stuff, dude!

So now that I’m a working girl and I have all the control over my finances (and I always fall short heh heh), I sometimes treat myself into stuff like these. Luxuries in life. I always wanted to learn Calligraphy and today is always a great time to start! I went crazy again and I just went to Glorietta 5 after work and bought these cool stuff. Let’s get it on!

Calligraphy Basic Stuff I bought:

  • Nibs – Php175 (3 pcs) Scribe Writing Essentials, Glorietta 5 | Php 90 The Craft Central, Greenbelt 5
  • Holder – Php120, Scribe Writing Essentials, Glorietta 5
  • Ink – Php275 Scribe Writing Essentials, Glorietta 5
  • Penmanship / Exercise Book – Php390 Scribe Writing Essentials, Glorietta 5 | Php 180 The Craft Central, Greenbelt 5

4/365 – 10 MINUS 21 (THINGS I DID BEFORE I TURNED 21) : GETTING MY OWN SAVINGS ACCOUNT

Getting My Own Savings Account

Investments should be done when you still don’t have any responsibilities. NOW is the time to do so. I got mine when I was still in College and I still use it up to this day. I know banks in the Philippines give Junior Savings account if you’re 18 years old and below but I really pushed my way to get a real Savings Account (because the design seems more tolerable than the Junior one, heh heh RT much). Since I belong to the working class now, this is where I keep my savings especially from 52 week challenge; my own 8 week challenge and; 500 challenge.

  • 52 week Challenge

52-wk-sample

This is an example of the 52 week challenge you can do on your own. You can settle with whatever is best comfortable with you. If you’re just starting on your work and your salary isn’t that high enough yet then you can just match it with just saving Php5.00 or Php10.00/ week. Just don’t forget to set it aside every week. 🙂

  • 8 week Challenge

For this, I am saving 250/cut-off because I’m saving up to open a COL Financial account for Stocks. I want to start investing as early as today so I will have ample time to save up for my future. You can also set aside a portion of your Salary or Monthly allowance for something you want to buy or invest in beside the 52 week challenge.

  • 500 Challenge

I also set aside Php500.00 every pay day for my investments in the future e.g. a house, or a car, or another degree. I just see to it that I save something for myself for future use.

I try to save as much as I can especially this time of my life because this is really the perfect time to save up so your future self and family won’t suffer. You will always be financially independent – never worrying for the future of your family or never limiting yourself in helping others as much as you want to because you have the resources.

PS. Don’t starve yourself in saving, just take what blessing is enough for you. Bes, di lahat sa’yo. Char-mander. Also, don’t stress yourself up – choose whatever plan you’re best comfortable in doing. Just enjoy the fulfillment of saving. 🙂

2/365 – Number 4/ 11:37/ January 2

How can I forget?

The way your eyes looked at me

When mine were blurred by tears

The way your lips were sealed

You don’t feel it anymore

Saying the words which caressed me

No I guess I won’t be hearing it anymore

Oh, I can still feel it all, I’m still struck so deeply

All of what it made me feel, I remember

The way your body shifted away in time

And there goes all my fears

Happening before my eyes, I’m weak

I told you I’m weak; I guess you didn’t hear

When I revealed my naked self in your eyes, did you see?

Did you? Did you feel my love, dear?

In that secluded place, I breathe

Through your love, I live; felt like a heap but it was all I need

Your hands don’t feel right when they found me near

It’s not the same anymore; the feeling

We shared was now burned; I’m screaming but there’s nothing you can hear

It was not mine to hold anymore; your heart

Which I embraced to protect with all of me

No it’s not mine anymore.

1/ 365 – 5 Tips I would advice my 2016 Self

Hi 2016 Self – we’ve been through a lot and it has shaped us in ways we don’t know possible. We’ve been through ups that created us new memories we can add into our life line and downs which made us forget how wonderful life is. Still, we’re here and we’re moving forward. That’s what’s important, right? Learning to accept and continue life as we know it. These are my words to you and all the beautiful ladies out there who will have the courage to carry on their life despite every circumstances that tried to bring them down.

  1. Don’t settle for anything less than what you originally wanted. Be firm with your non-negotiables. Don’t settle for silver when you wanted gold. Don’t settle with pwede na. Babe, don’t degrade your standards just because someone gives some shit for you. That’s just trash compare to what should be truly yours. You are ever worthy of whatever you aspire for, so make it happen.
  2. Learn to walk away. ‘Second chances, they don’t matter. People never change’ (Hayley Williams on Misery Business) Set your soft and hard limits – yes fine, it’s okay to give second chances but it should end on that. Once the deed was done, it will happen again. Trust me. Get out of that destructive relationship. Walk away with dignity – for you to not lose yourself any further. You did your job, you gave all your love, and you did everything you can to make it work. If he doesn’t appreciate it still, it’s time to pack your bags and leave.
  3. Put yourself above anyone. No, it’s not being selfish but it’s about loving yourself so much as you have loved everyone else. When you love someone, you don’t want anyone, not even a single bee, hurt them and that’s what you will also do to yourself. Appreciate your strengths and embrace your weaknesses. Love yourself more when you feel like no one does. That is when no one can ever get near to hurt you.
  4. Learn to trust God more. It really, really works. My Tita once told me I was the happiest girl experiencing break-up. Well, maybe this is the reason why. I trusted God above anyone else. I let His love to numb whatever pain I was feeling. I let His love, and only His love, to reign in my heart and soul and it worked seemingly right for me. Do it and you’ll know how wonderful it is for your broken heart to be filled and reincarnated in God’s love.
  5. Don’t give up proven & tested relationships. Spend and cherish moments with your family and best friends even when it would cause an argument between you and your partner. They were there when he wasn’t around yet; they are there through the ups and downs of your relationships and; they will be there when he breaks your heart. They will always be there for you and you should always be there for them also. These are true relationships that you can keep forever.

Time and people may change and circumstances may seem to repeat and repeat again; but with what you’ve been through, you’re different now. You’re stronger. You’re better. You’re braver. You’re much more ready for something bigger this year.

Love,

2017 self.
